Management and Outcomes of Binge-Eating Disorder

 

Course Description: This course focuses on evaluating the effectiveness and comparative effectiveness of treatments for patients with binge-eating disorder (BED) and bariatric surgery patients and children with loss-of-control (LOC) eating. Studies of therapies include pharmacological interventions, psychological and behavioral interventions, or combinations of approaches.

Learning Objectives:

  • Analyze the definition of, prevalence, and challenges in diagnosing and treating binge-eating disorder (BED) and loss-of-control (LOC) eating
  • Analyze the efficacy and effectiveness of interventions for individuals with BED, postbariatric surgery patients with LOC eating, and children with LOC eating
  • Analyze the applicability and limitations of the research findings for binge-eating disorder and loss-of-control eating

Course Author(s) Qualifications:

Dr. Berkman is a health services researcher focusing on access to health care and health care quality. Dr. Berkman was co-Principal Investigator for the development of the Health Literacy Skills Instrument, a short tool that measures people's health literacy skills, including ability to understand health-related written prose and document text, quantitative information, oral instructions, and navigation of internet resources. Dr. Berkman often conducts systematic reviews as a member of the RTI-UNC Evidence-Based Practice Center.

Dr. Brownley is a faculty member with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Stress and Health Research Program and the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders.

Dr. Peat is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders.

Dr. Lohr has 40 years of experience in health services and policy research. She was the founding director of the RTI International–University of North Carolina Evidence-based Practice Center and is now senior adivsor to the EPC.

Dr. Bann is an expert in statistics and psychometrics with more than 12 years of experience in psychometric analysis, scale and index development, program evaluation, and statistical analysis of behavioral data.

Dr. Wallace has more than 35 years of research and clinical experience concerning the health and development of children’s and adolescents.

Dr. Bulik holds the first endowed professorship in eating disorders in the United States and is also Director of Research at the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders. A clinical psychologist by training, Dr. Bulik has been conducting research and treating individuals with eating disorders since 1982.
