Course Description: This course provides an accessible framework for culturally competent practice with children and families in child maltreatment cases. Numerous workable strategies and concrete examples are presented to help professionals address cultural concerns at each stage of the assessment and intervention process. Professionals learn new ways of thinking about their own cultural viewpoints as they gain critical skills for maximizing the accuracy of assessments for physical and sexual abuse; overcoming language barriers in parent and child interviews; respecting families' values and beliefs while ensuring children's safety; creating a welcoming agency environment; and more.

Dr. Fontes is on the faculty of the University Without Walls at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She has dedicated two decades to making the social service, mental health, criminal justice, and medical systems more responsive to culturally diverse people. She is a leader in the field of cultural competence for professionals who work with diverse populations--winning the Cultural Competence Award of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC). Dr. Fontes grew up in New York City and holds a PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She also earned a master's degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and writes books, articles and chapters for professional and lay audiences. She does trainings, writes curricula, and consults throughout the U.S. and around the world.
Dr. Fortson currently works as a behavioral scientist on the Child Maltreatment and Sexual Violence Team in the Research and Evaluation Branch of the Division of Violence Prevention (DVP) in CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. Prior to joining CDC, she was an assistant professor at the University of South Carolina-Aiken in Aiken, South Carolina. Dr. Fortson received her BS in psychology from the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, and her MA and PhD in Clinical Child Psychology from West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia.
Dr. Klevens is an epidemiologist with the Division of Violence Prevention (DVP) in CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC). Dr. Klevens received her PhD in epidemiology from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, her MPH from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and her MD from the National University in Bogotá.
Dr. Merrick is a behavioral scientist with the Surveillance Branch in the Division of Violence Prevention at CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. Dr. Merrick received her master’s and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from the San Diego State University/University of California, San Diego Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology, where she served as a program coordinator for the San Diego site of the Longitudinal Studies on Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN) consortium.
Dr. Gilbert joined the Emory University School of Medicine faculty in 2014. She received her MD at University of North Carolina School of Medicine and completed her emergency medicine residency at the University of Arizona.
Sandra P. Alexander is a subject matter expert on child maltreatment in the Division of Violence Prevention (DVP), within CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC).
