Course Description: In this course, the authors examine and summarize psychological theory, research, and clinical experience addressing the sexualization of girls. They (a) define sexualization; (b) examine the prevalence and provide examples of sexualization in society and in cultural institutions, as well as interpersonally and intrapsychically; (c) evaluate the evidence suggesting that sexualization has negative consequences for girls and for the rest of society; and (d) describe positive alternatives that may help counteract the influence of sexualization.

Dr. Zurbriggen is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she is also affiliated with the Department of Feminist Studies. Much of her research focuses on behaviors in which power and sex are linked (such as rape and childhood sexual abuse), on psychological linkages between power, objectification, and sex, and on media representations of sex, power, and gender.
Dr. Collins is a senior behavioral scientist at the RAND Corporation. She also sits on RAND's Human Subjects Protection Committee. Dr. Collins is a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, and a member of the the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. She has a PhD in social psychology from UCLA.
Dr. Lamb is Professor of Counseling Psychology in the Department of Counseling and School Psychology at UMass Boston where she has also served as Chair of the department and is currently Program Director of the Mental Health Counseling program.
Dr. Roberts is Professor and Chair of the Psychology Department at Colorado College. Her research focuses on the psychological consequences of the sexualization and objectification of girls and women.
Dr. Tolman is Professor of Social Welfare and Psychology at The Hunter College School of Social Work and The Graduate Center of The City University of New York. She is also the former director of the Center for Research on Gender and Sexuality, and Professor of Human Sexuality Studies at San Francisco State University. She received her EdD in Human Development and Psychology at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1992.
Dr. Ward is a Psychology Professor at University of Michigan.
