Psychotropic Medications: What Every Counselor Should Know


Course Description: This course presents a guide to psychotropic medications which is discussed in readable language for mental health professionals. The following classes are included:

  • Antipsychotics/Neuroleptics 
  • Medication-Induced Symptoms Treatment 
  • Antimanic Medications/Mood Stabilizers 
  • Antidepressant Medications 
  • Antianxiety Medications 
  • Stimulant Medications 
  • Narcotic and Opioid Analgesics 
  • Hypnotics (Sleep Aids) 
  • Substance Use Disorders Medications

Each section includes the following topics for the different medication types: purpose; usual dose, frequency, and side effects; potential side effects; potential for abuse or dependence; emergency conditions; cautions; and special considerations for pregnant women.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain knowledge of the symptoms treated by each class of medication
  • Delineate the proper administration and potential side effects of each medication
  • Evaluate potential dangers associated with each medication (e.g., emergency conditions, abuse/dependence, and risks to pregnant women)

Dr. Stoner received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center – College of Pharmacy in 1994. He is a member of the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists (ASHP), the Missouri Society of Health Systems Pharmacists (MSHP), and served as the director of an ASHP accredited psychiatric Pharmacy Practice & Administration residency program for 10 years (1998-2008). In addition, he has served as President of the Mid-America Colleges of Clinical Pharmacy (MACCP).

The Education Law and Commissioner’s Regulations allow a LMSW or LCSW to complete no more than one-third of the required hours as self-study in each registration period. This would translate to a limit of 12 hours for a typical 36-month registration period.
