Course Description: This course summarizes the research about youth violence—the health consequences, trends, disparities, causes, costs, and prevention strategies. This course outlines important strategies for youth violence prevention that are based on strong evidence and experience. It includes examples of specific programs and activities that have been found to be effective. These evidence-based youth violence prevention strategies focus on reducing the factors that put young people at risk for violence and bolstering the factors that strengthen their positive development and buffer against violence.

Dr. David-Ferdon is the Deputy Associate Director for Science (ADS) within the Office of the Director of the Division of Violence Prevention in the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. As the Deputy, she assists the ADS in providing leadership, planning, and guidance to DVP management and staff on scientific policy, research methodology, and priorities for research activities. Her work focuses primarily on the topics of child abuse and neglect, suicide, and youth violence, including school violence and bullying. She also supports prevention science for all violence topics addressed by CDC.
Dr. David-Ferdon received her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, and her Master of Science and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.
Dr. David-Ferdon has authored or coauthored over 45 peer-reviewed publications, government publications, and textbook chapters and has given over 100 presentations at national, state and local conferences and meetings. Her presentation topics have included adolescent health, violence as a public health problem, and prevention strategies based on the best available evidence.
Dr. Simon is the Associate Director for Science within the Office of the Director of the Division of Violence Prevention in the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. Dr. Simon received his PhD in preventive medicine from the University of Southern California’s School of Medicine in Los Angeles, California.
