Course Description: This course is designed to enhance social workers' awareness, values, knowledge, skills, and methods of practice across settings, where priorities may vary greatly (and addresses principles that are valuable to all mental health professionals). This course is intended to inform practice and interventions with clients who have Substance Use Disorders (SUDs); improve the quality of treatment for clients with SUDs; and encourage professionals’ awareness of the knowledge, skills, competencies, and attitudes necessary to work effectively with clients who have SUDs, their families, and other service providers.

Dr. Fisher has been in clinical practice for 30 years. He is currently in full-time clinical practice at Comprehensive Counseling Services, Inc., in Roanoke, Virginia. He holds a master’s degree in clinical social work and a doctoral degree in clinical social work and social policy.
Jessica Holton, MSW, LCSW, LCAS has nearly two decades of experience and is a private practitioner specializing in treating Trauma & Stress Related Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, and Addictions. She earned her Master of Social Work and became certified in Social Work Practice with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing from East Carolina University.
Dr. van Wormer is Professor of Social Work at the University of Northern Iowa. Her Ph.D. is in sociology from the University of Georgia.
